IFS and BRC Certification Audit at MARLENKA International Ltd.
BRC and IFS audits in food processing plants focus on a thorough examination of strict requirements in the field of:
- responsibility of top management in relation to food quality and safety,
- HACCP system,
- staff hygiene, staff qualifications and training,
- hygiene of operation and infrastructure,
- checking quality and safety of products.
These requirements are primarily determined by two international norms – the German-French IFS Food standard (International Featured Standard) for food and the British Global Standard for Food Safety (GSFS) also known by the acronym BRC.
Ing. Jitka Vokurková, Head Auditor, BUREAU VERITAS CZECH REPUBLIC, s.r.o.:
As an auditor of these standards I have had the opportunity to check compliance with the requirements of both standards at the company MARLENKA International Ltd. based in Frýdek-Místek. The company produces honey cakes and other honey desserts. In November 2014, the company applied for certification following both standards for the first time and the result of the first integrated audit is an obtained certificate at the highest level for both BRC and IFS.
Based on 12 years of my practical experience, I can say that it is not completely common to obtain a certificate at the highest level at initial certification, and such high commitment and involvement of top management during audit is not common, either. It is a long time since I have encountered such advanced technology and infrastructure in a food plant and such a high level of hygiene in the given setting. The whole team from the owner downwards to the employees on the unique line for production of the Marlenka cake was maximally prepared for this audit. Everything is designed with a view to manufacturing a quality product and satisfying end consumers. For its customers, the company has built a unique Marlenka Visitor Centre where anyone can see the whole unusual production of honey cakes from a special corridor and thus ensure that the company takes the quality of its products truly seriously, that it uses high-quality ingredients, what technology is applied and what the work team is like. Hats off, this is really rare to see in the food processing industry.
And what has the audit at Marlenka brought to me as an auditor? A high benchmark for future assessment of other food processing plants and most importantly, the experience that even for the first time, a company may be at such a high level to meet the strictest present-day hygiene standards without difficulty.
